The Settlement Grants Program (SGP) was introduced in 2005 following a review of settlement services programs funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The aim of the SGP is to fund services which help clients become self reliant and participate equitably in Australian society as soon as possible after arrival. The funding priorities of the SGP are determined through an annual assessment of settlement needs. This approach ensures that the services provided through the SGP are:
• targeted towards those communities and locations in greatest need of settlement assistance • responsive to changing settlement patterns and needs.
The Settlement Grants Program is designed to respond to the needs of newly arrived migrants and humanitarian entrants experiencing difficulties in accessing mainstream services. Services provided under this program include: casework, information and referral, support groups, and advocacy with service providers.
The MRC employs bilingual SGP workers to provide settlement information and referrals to assist clients to access English language classes, housing, employment, education and training, health services, immigration advice, family support services, etc. The SGP workers outreach at various locations throughout Western Sydney in order to meet the needs of individuals and communities.
The MRC has a number of SGP projects to assist newly arrived communities with the settlement process. These projects include:
