Newly arrived migrants may be eligible to
learn English through the Adult Migrant English Program
(AMEP). You can study up to 510 hours of English free of
charge. Free childcare can also be arranged if required.
You are required to register within three months of arrival in
Australia or gaining your permanent residency, or you risk losing
your entitlement. Once you have registered on the other hand,
you have the option of delaying your tuition if you first need to
attend to other pressing responsibilities. The AMEP offers a
range of learning options. There are full-time or part-time
classes at various venues and locations. You can also study
from home, through a distance learning program, or with the help of
a home tutor. Your Migrant Resource Centre has information
about the AMEP class and other ways to improve your English.
