DoCS African Sessional Project

The aim of the African Sessional Worker Project is to assist Community Services caseworkers from the Department of Human Services and better equip them with language and cultural information when working with African families to ensure that constructive and appropriate interventions and case plans are implemented.

Objectives:

  • To assist Community Services caseworkers with language and communication in order to make appropriate assessments and interventions with African families.

  • To assist in case planning and referral support systems where appropriate.

  • To assist African Sessional Workers to gain National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) recognition on basic interpreting to assist Community Services caseworkers overcome language barriers.

  • To build positive relationships between Community Services and African families.

  • To provide community education to inform African families about the role of Community Services and rights and obligations under the child protection system and laws.
